10 Cosy Autumn Activities to Enjoy Indoors For The Elderly

autumn arts and crafts

As the golden leaves settle on the ground and a gentle sea breeze rolls in from the Weymouth coast, we can all feel autumn truly arriving. The cooler days invite us to slow down, wrap up warm, and enjoy the comforts of being indoors.

But staying inside doesn’t have to mean doing less. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity to discover new ways to stay active, creative, and connected. At our care home here in Dorset, we love turning the cooler months into a season of warmth, laughter, and togetherness.

For some, spending more time indoors can feel a little isolating once the chill sets in, but with a bit of imagination, it can become something truly special. From arts and crafts to music, games, and gentle exercise, there are so many wonderful ways to lift our spirits and keep moving while enjoying the comfort of home.

Here are 10 of our favourite cosy indoor activities that bring smiles, laughter, and a lovely sense of community to our residents throughout autumn and winter.

Autumn-themed arts and crafts

Arts and crafts are a great way to get the hands moving and the mind flowing with creative ideas. Keep it seasonal by collecting fallen leaves and making prints from their unique character. Or host a painting class to create representations of those vibrant natural colours.

Knitting, crocheting or sewing clubs

Nothing says comfort quite like picking up a sewing kit or knitting needles and creating something special for the grandchildren. Hosting a craft session with the goal of making a gift for a loved one is a lovely way to stay engaged and focused. Simple projects like jumpers, scarves, mittens or socks keep the mind active while giving residents the joy of making something meaningful and heartfelt.

Bingo or quiz afternoons

Who doesn’t love a little friendly competition to keep the mind sharp? Games and quizzes are a wonderful way to pass the time indoors while encouraging laughter, conversation, and gentle mental exercise. Adding a fun incentive, like winning an extra slice of afternoon cake, will make the activities even more engaging and bring everyone together for moments of joy and connection.

Baking days

Cake baking is a great activity to get the mind active while enjoying a delicious sweet treat after all the work is done. Get creative by making some cupcakes, sprinkled with fun decoration sessions afterwards, or something a little more seasonal with some apple cakes to enjoy with their afternoon tea.

Warm drink tasting

There’s something wonderfully comforting about sipping a warm drink while watching the autumn leaves dance in the breeze outside. Why not make it a little more special with a warm drink tasting session? Residents can try a variety of flavours, from spiced apple and cinnamon to classic cocoa or nostalgic mulled wine-inspired drinks. And share which ones they enjoy most to add to their shopping list for the winter months.

Making soup with local seasonal vegetables

Soup glorious soup. There’s nothing quite like the comforting aroma of a homemade soup on a chilly autumn day. Get residents involved in creating their own seasonal soups, letting them choose the ingredients and enjoy the process from start to finish. Simple, seasonal vegetables like pumpkin, carrots, and squash make for a delicious autumn treat while keeping the activity light and engaging.

Pumpkin decorating

No autumn would be complete without a little Halloween fun. Host a creative crafting session where residents can carve, paint or decorate their own pumpkins. It’s a delightful way to get into the Halloween spirit and create festive decorations that can be proudly displayed around the care home for everyone to enjoy.

Make your own autumn wreath

Bring the cosy warmth of autumn into your care home by helping residents create their very own seasonal wreaths. Using locally collected or foraged treasures like pinecones, berries, twigs and colourful leaves, residents can craft a beautiful decoration for their door. On a mild day, take a trip through a nearby park or garden to gather materials, then return to the care home for a friendly, hands-on workshop.

Hot chocolate & carols afternoon

There’s something truly special about gathering together to sip a steaming cup of hot chocolate while sharing favourite carols. Residents can enjoy the cosy atmosphere, sing along to beloved songs, and even reminisce about festive memories from years past. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring the residents together to fill the home with music and celebrate the indoor season.

Gratitude tree

Sometimes, putting thoughts down on paper is the perfect way to reflect on all the positive things in life. Create a little project for residents by making a gratitude tree in the communal living space, where everyone can write something they are thankful for on a leaf and add it to the tree. It’s a simple yet uplifting activity that brings people together and fills the home with a visible reminder of positivity throughout the season.
