Friary Care has always been a keen advocate for training and development, and over the past few years we have encouraged new starters to develop their careers in Health and Social Care by taking an apprenticeship or student placement with us. If you are new to social care, then a Care Apprenticeship in Weymouth is a really good place to start.
An apprenticeship is a great way to develop your skills and knowledge first-hand and progress in your career.
Health, Social Care & Early Years Qualifications
- Level 1 or 2 qualification in Health & Social Care are designed to enable you to enter employment at a trainee or apprenticeship level or to progress onto a level 3 qualification.
- Level 3 qualification allows you to progress into employment, continue training and apprenticeships in the workplace, or move on to university for training in nursing, social work, education, and other related professions.
- College courses usually require students to complete work experience (e.g. 120 hours) as part of their courses.
Care Apprenticeships
- Apprenticeships take between one and five years to complete.
- Apprenticeships are for anyone over the age of 16 – please note – they’re not just for young people.
- You are likely to spend four days on work placement and one day at a training centre of college.
- You will gain a formally recognised qualification at the end of the apprenticeship.
- Your salary will be the same as any new starter in your chosen role. And your employer will normally pay your apprenticeship fees, so unlike most University degrees, your learning is debt-free.
Is a care apprenticeship for you?
Apprenticeships in care are a great way to develop your skills and knowledge whilst earning a wage. The best thing is that you will be learning on the job, whilst being supported by a team of experienced care professionals, who will help you all the way.
- You will get valuable hands-on experience in a real-world care setting, allowing you to apply your theoretical knowledge to practical situations.
- You will be able to develop those essential skills such as communication, empathy, problem-solving, and teamwork, which are crucial for a career in adult care.
- There are lots of opportunities to progress through apprenticeships if you wish. Students that have had placements with us have gone on to gain industry-recognised qualifications and enhance their employability, paving the way for future career progression within the care sector.
- Working as an apprentice within a care home like Friary Care exposes you to a network of professionals in the field, providing valuable contacts and potential mentors.
Care Apprenticeships in Weymouth
One example of our investment in local talent is our close working relationship with the Health & Social Care course at Weymouth College, where local students regularly come to work with us as part of their studies.
Here’s some highlights about what they had to say about their experience of working at Friary Care:-
“I have been working here as a part of my Health and Social care course that I’m studying at Weymouth College – I attend my placement here at Kingsley Court every Monday and Tuesday. I have to complete 120 hours of work experience at a placement to pass my course.
The staff all made me feel very welcome and the residents seem to enjoy having me here and talking to them and completing activities with them.
I’ve found working here very eye opening and so interesting to learn about the people who live here. It’s also very rewarding as you can tell they enjoy speaking to me and learning about my life.”

“We want to recruit locally, and we hope to retain staff for the long-term. Apprentices bring new ideas, perspectives, and approaches to the care home environment and help enrich the overall culture within our organisation and promote innovation.
Apprentices allows us to invest in the development of future talent within Friary Care, ensuring we have access to skilled carers to meet our future staffing needs.”
