How Care Homes Can Reduce Loneliness in Older Adults

Older people are particularly vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation, which can have a significant impact on their physical and emotional wellbeing. These feelings become more pronounced in times of change, such as moving into a care home, where being away from familiar routines and surroundings may feel unsettling at first.

Because of this, it’s important to implement meaningful strategies to reduce loneliness as part of everyday care. At Friary Care, we understand that the right environment, combined with the right level of support can make a real and lasting difference to how residents feel.

Care homes play a vital role in combating loneliness in older adults by creating opportunities for connection, companionship and community. Here, we explore some of the key ways this can be achieved.

Strategies for addressing loneliness

Encourage meaningful connections

At Friary Care, we like to think of ourselves as one big family and we encourage residents to build genuine connections with fellow residents and staff. We shift the focus away from simply ‘keeping busy’ and instead support residents to build meaningful connections through shared hobbies and conversation.

Our staff are trained to spot signs of loneliness and develop tailored care plans to ensure every resident feels supported and included. Sometimes, this can be as simple as implementing a routine that naturally incorporates social interaction, helping residents feel connected without the pressure of initiating themselves.

Access to shared spaces

Our Weymouth care homes are designed with residents’ needs at the forefront. We’ve created a range of welcoming shared spaces where residents can relax and spend time together.

These environments naturally encourage conversation and companionship, helping foster a sense of community within the home.

Support with technology

We support residents in embracing technology by assisting with the use of tools such as FaceTime and Zoom. This allows residents to stay connected with loved ones who live far away and may not be able to visit as often as they would like, helping to maintain important relationships and reduce feelings of isolation.

A varied programme of social activities

We provide a varied programme of activities throughout the week, giving residents regular opportunities to socialise in a relaxed and enjoyable way. We regularly host arts, crafts and music sessions as well as venturing out into the local community to enjoy attractions and public spaces such as the park or beach.

Wherever possible, activities are tailored to individual interests, ensuring every resident has the opportunity to engage in something meaningful to them.

Facilitating family relationships

Maintaining strong family connections is incredibly important for emotional wellbeing. We encourage regular visits and invite loved ones to take part in activities and events, creating opportunities for residents to spend time with those closest to them.

Animal therapy to support well being

Sometimes connection doesn’t have to be in human form! Many of our residents find great comfort in spending time with animals, which can have a calming and uplifting effect. We regularly welcome therapy animals into the care home, providing moments of companionship and emotional support.

We’re really proud of the work we do at Friary Care to support the physical and emotional wellbeing of our residents. We work hard to create a welcoming environment where no one feels alone.
