What did Halloween celebrations look like for you back in the 1940s through the 1960s? Do you remember all those homemade outfits you loved to dress up in, or the classic games you used to play around the neighbourhood? Halloween has always been about more than just sweets and costumes. Many of our residents fondly recall the simple joys of Halloweens past, from the neighbourhood gatherings to making decorations that filled homes with festive spirit.
We asked our care home residents how they celebrated Halloween back in the day. So let’s take a trip down memory lane as we hear from our visitors and residents about how they used to celebrate Halloween.
Costumes That Sparked Imagination
Nothing was too extravagant when it came to Halloween costumes. Halloween has always been a time for creativity and fun, and many of our residents remember the excitement of planning and making their own costumes.
Back then, everything was homemade with your mum’s sewing machine. The process of making the costume together with siblings or parents was just as memorable as wearing it. Your outfit was something you had been planning for a while, thinking you needed to be the scariest or most creative person in the neighbourhood. And of course, the thrill of dressing up and going door-to-door to show off your costume added to the magic of the evening.
Do you remember your most favourite outfit? Was it a witch, ghost, superhero, an animal or something else?
Traditional Halloween Games
Remember those laugh-inducing games of apple bobbing and pass-the-parcel with Halloween-themed prizes? Oh, the memories! Asking this question made our residents smile a lot.
Do you recall gathering as a child to share scary tales around candlelight or under the glow of jack-o’-lanterns? Trying to tell the spookiest story with your friends or feeling a shiver of fear at someone else’s tale, unsure if it could really be true.
And how about those pumpkin carving contests? Can you picture the most creative design you ever made, carefully scooping out the insides to bring your spooky masterpiece to life? Or those treasure hunts, where the thrill wasn’t just in the treats you found, but in the excitement of searching and competing to collect the most sweets?
Many of those traditions, back in the day, made Halloween a time of pure fun. With games that brought much laughter and playful scares with the family and neighbourhood.
No Such Thing as Too Many Sweets
Too many sweets? No such thing! Many of our residents fondly remember roaming the neighbourhood, knocking on doors and playfully trying to scare the community in hopes of collecting as many treats as possible. For some, the best part of Halloween was seeing who could gather the largest haul of sweets!
Back in the day, the treats were often simpler but just as delicious. Classic throwback sweets included marshmallow treats, toffee apples, jelly sweets, sherbet fountains, pear drops and boiled sweets.
A big part of the fun was also making festive treats at home with family. Nostalgic favourites like toffee apples and pumpkin pies were lovingly prepared and enjoyed together around the Halloween holidays.

At our care home in Weymouth, we know how special it is to keep Halloween traditions alive for our residents.
